With a modicum of style necessary to cover over the cracks of some iffy CG (the practical effects are much more suitably visceral and Cronenbergian), and an absolutely bonkers score by Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson keeping the feature moving even when nothing is happening (perfect example: immediately after Jovovich's Alice kicks the zombie dog's face off), Anderson actually did a pretty sterling effort with such a comparatively low budget.

It's a shame then, that this first feature was the only halfway decent one, made at a time when there was still the promise that, with a little finesse, they could take this franchise to Fast Five heights. The result? He'd craft a billion dollar franchise - easily the most successful ever based on a game - and even marry the star. It was Mortal Kombat - that relatively rare successful videogame adaptation - which got him a shot at adapting the massively popular Japanese console game franchise, seeking to craft something of a prequel film, on a modest budget (half that of his previous films) called Resident Evil: Ground Zero. Anderson enjoyed a modest success with his sophomore effort, 1995's Mortal Kombat, but his next two sci-fi flicks flopped spectacularly (despite Event Horizon being a surprisingly entertaining effort which has since gone on to develop something of a cult following). The Resident Evil franchise is a little like the Fast and Furious series, only we unfortunately never got that magic " Fast Five" moment. Despite being the first in a series of ultimately diminishing returns, 2002's Resident Evil was a pretty decent shot at a modest budget adaptation of the videogame.
